Response Assignment 7
Read the assigned pages from Pity the Drowned Horses. For this exercise, please draft 2-3 discussion questions on a poem or poems. Your questions may deal with any topic, ranging from the content or subject matter, form, style, etc. of the poem. Choose one of these questions and write an answer as your response. Be prepared to share your discussion questions in class.

Response Assignment 6

Read the assigned poems. Compare the poems and their use of voice. Voice is the characteristic speech and thought patterns of a first person narrator; a persona. Because voice has so much to do with the reader's experience of a work of literature, it is one of the most important elements of a piece of writing. It may help to identify the use of tones in your analysis of voice. How does the voice of the speaker influence your reading of the poem? If these poems had been written about the same topic, but with a different speaker, would that change the meaning of the poem?

Response Assignment 5

Response Assignment 2
Read the assigned poems from the handout and choose one to analyze. Discuss how the poem is narrative or lyric or does it show elements of both? How does the form of the poem create meaning? Refer to your notes from class for help with terminology.

Response Assignment 1
After you have read the assigned poems from your handout, pick one or two to analyze.  In your analysis, explore what you think the poem is about and what images, sounds, ideas, and word choices made you come to this conclusion. Refer to your Handbook of Poetic Form for help in discussing “allegory” and “metaphor.”
